I was impressed by the actress, who adopted the gestures of the book: she kept tossing her head and twisting her neck, very much as Gwendolen does in the novel. There is lots of fascinating serpent imagery--and horse imagery.Frisbeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07394353185610393979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25137929.post-3375904948907244562010-02-09T16:57:35.429-08:002010-02-09T16:57:35.429-08:00Actually your comments bring home how Davies is no...Actually your comments bring home how Davies is not interested in the important marriage theme of the novel, but replaces that with lost identities (so Daniel is central). The Harcourt marriage becomes an instance of abuse of a sadist in the film so we are discouraged from generalizing.

EllenEllenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14979942382683140531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25137929.post-48478442781676633862010-02-06T23:51:58.294-08:002010-02-06T23:51:58.294-08:00I'm having trouble getting back into the 20th ...I'm having trouble getting back into the 20th or 21st century. I saw the movie before reading the book. So far I have only read Middlemarch which is a superb book, but I do want to read more of her work. I love the idea of reading lots of it and close together--not something I seem to be able to do very often these days.Daniellehttp://danitorres.typepad.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25137929.post-47905496606534103632010-02-06T07:29:59.675-08:002010-02-06T07:29:59.675-08:00Eliot really understands marriage.
